Northward Acoustics is one of the very few companies in the world entirely specialized in Studio Design, with over 150 projects spanning over 20 countries and 4 continents.


Whether you are looking to build or upgrade a Recording & Mixing facility, a Mastering Suite or a Post-Production Suite, we have the required knowledge, know-how and on-site experience. Not only do we have highly qualified Acoustics & Vibrations Engineers on board, we also have practical experience of working in a studio: we own one. All of us are also active musicians - so we truly understand what it takes to design a good studio.


FTB Rooms (Front-To-Back) are our in-house specialty. This unique & proprietary new approach to Control Room and Mastering Suite design was developed to achieve the highest standards in room response & translation, providing a highly accurate yet natural listening environment.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS


Professional Recording & Mixing Studios, Mastering Suites or Post-Production Facilities are unconventional structures and require the space they will be built in to meet very specific structural, technical & architectural requirements.

FTB Control Rooms, Mastering Suites & Post Production suites are subject to
a few closed specifications :

  • a minimum usable area of (W/L/H) 5.00/6.00/3.20m - 16.5/20/10.5ft (30m² / 330ft²), >6.00/7.00/3.60m - 20/23/12ft is better
  • a minimum load bearing capacity of 5kN/m² - 105lbs/ft² within that surface, >6kN/m² - 125lbs/ft² is better
  • no columns or large beams within that surface
  • if possible ceiling should be void of ventilation ducts and other technical ducts or pipes, especially when dimensions are closer to the minima. Existing ducts will likely have to be re-routed

And a few open specifications :

  • avoid spaces with floor heating systems integrated in the existing concrete slab
  • avoid spaces where multiple undocumented structural modifications have taken place over the years
  • avoid proximity to train lines and roads with heavy traffic
  • avoid spaces with difficult access
     Live rooms are subject to a few open specifications :

  • high ceilings, in excess of 3.2m - 10.5ft
  • a minimum load bearing capacity of 5kN/m² - 105lbs/ft² within that surface or better
  • no columns or large beams within that surface
  • if possible ceiling should be void of ventilation ducts and other technical ducts or pipes, especially when dimensions are close to the minima
  • avoid spaces with floor heating systems integrated in the existing concrete slab
